A Right Royal Handover

After much anticipation and a great deal of waiting for the big day (particularly more so for a few key participants), it’s finally done. The Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla has come and gone in a blur of Union Flag bunting and Coronation Quiche, and the reign of King Charles III has officially begun.

While for us, the pinnacle of this royal handover is behind us, for Charles and Camilla, the long weekend of celebrations was just the beginning. Now the work begins.

There may have been a lot more pomp and circumstance in this particular starter induction, but I imagine there are many elements of the new job that would feel quite familiar to you and I. The equal balance of nerves and excitement on the first day; the desire to fill the shoes and go beyond the work of your predecessor; getting to know a new team who will support you in the new role. You may even get a new suit or outfit that is fitting for this next chapter of your career.

So, what sage advice can a recruiter of over 30 years offer to the new king and anyone else who may be in the early stages of a new role?

There’s the obvious first day tips: ensure you arrive on time, if not early, at the start of the day; make lots of notes; dress for the part. Charles certainly dressed appropriately for the part of his new role, but you may opt for a slightly more subtle approach.

Once the first day has been successfully navigated, the days and weeks that follow should be all about getting to know the role, team and company you have joined. While you will have probably begun to familiarise yourself with the company’s purpose and mission during the interview stage, now is the time to understand how you can contribute to achieving those objectives. Get to know the people you are working alongside as well as your team leader. Understand their expectations of you and begin to strategize how you can meet and exceed those expectations.

A good way to gain a good perspective on the expectations of you is to familiarise yourself with the work of your predecessor. Charles has the benefit of having known his predecessor pretty well and, while they may feel like some pretty big shoes to fill, this knowledge will provide the foundations for what he wants to achieve next in this role.

Finally, enjoy it! Any new role, whether it is King or not, is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your skills and make an impact on a whole new level. We here at ABPM+ are on hand to help you discover that new opportunity and take the next step in your career journey. Contact us today to find out how.
