This article by my colleague Matt Byrne within ABPM+ tickled me and made me shudder at the stress of moving homes but on occasion a necessity that must be undertaken. Matt does as a by-product raise an insight to the importance of both the construct of your team and career.

He moved house recently and let me hand over to Matt in his own words.

“Last week I moved house. To be more accurate about it – six men and three vans moved the contents of one house into another.

I was utterly amazed at how much extra stuff we had now compared with 14 years ago, when our last move happened – even though we’ve been gently decluttering the place for months. I did the job myself that last time, hiring a van and engaging the services of a few mates in return for some beers. Things are different now – we own five times as many things, and I’m 14 years older. I don’t want to be hauling wardrobes up staircases at my age, no sir!

So my role was a combination of box co-ordinator, house cleaner, occasional lifter, directions giver, tea maker, garden clearer, and morale booster.

But morale was already high, so that part of my job was very limited. I chatted to the second-in-command removals guy (also called Matt) about the work he was doing, and he told me that he enjoyed everything about it! The physical challenge, the banter, the positive impact that it made on the client once they were finally in the new place, and the feeling of pleasant exhaustion at the end of the day.

I can understand all this, but it doesn’t make me want to do that job myself! I just wouldn’t be suited to it – and I don’t think Matt would enjoy the entirely non-physical work that I do either.

The moral of the story is a simple one – find out what makes you happy and do that. If your current situation is making you miserable, change it. Be like Matt.”
