This week, we cast our minds back 30 years – sounds like a long time ago, but when I think back to what was going on at the time, it feels remarkably recent!

Let me refresh your memory: the year is 1994, a year of political change and economic growth that would continue over the coming years. It was the year that the Channel Tunnel, was opened. Nelson Mandela became the first black President of South Africa.

Back home, Britpop was thriving, and we were busting out our killer moves to Blur, Oasis and Suede. Others among us were singing along to ‘Love is All Around Us’ by Wet Wet Wet – and kept it at the UK No.1 spot for a whole 15 weeks!

It was an excellent year for film as well: 1994 was the year that Forrest Gump, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction and The Mask were released. I’ll let you be the judges of which was the best output of 1994 – my favourite Shawshank and in my top 5 films of all time!

We couldn’t pass 1994 by without reminding ourselves of what a year for romance it was as well! There were several major marriages that year: Michael Jackson wed Lisa Marie Presley, Liam Neeson wed Natasha Richardson, and perhaps most significant of all, I married my wonderful wife, Rebecca.

For ABPM, it was also a pretty stellar year. 4 years into the swing of things, and our very own Sarah Torrington joined us, working upstairs in the box room of our Bailey Lane offices in Sheffield, alongside the inimitable Jeff Price, as our brand new Accountant. 30 years on, she continues to be a vital component of our team helping me run this ship ABPM Recruitment Ltd as Finance Director. It’s been a remarkable 30 years with her unwavering support and I continue to be incredibly grateful for her dedication, work ethic, practical advice and friendship – the brains of the operation, many would say!
