Would you believe it 60..!

Last month, Match of the Day turned 60!

I know what you’re going to say: ‘Surely not?!’; ‘It can’t be? Can it?!’. Kenneth Wolstenholme to Gary Lineker, from black and white TV to full surround sound smart TVs; I can safely say I do not remember  Kenneth Wolstenholme but much else from the past are fond memories, including being given permission to stay up late on Saturdays to watch the mighty Don Revie’s Leeds beating (in many cases literally for those who may remember Bremner, Hunter and Jack Charlton!) all comers at Elland Road.

But yes, Dear Reader, it is true MOTD celebrated the 6-0 milestone. With hopefully many good years still ahead, it felt like a good opportunity to look back and reflect on other events and perhaps share some of the wisdom accumulated along the way (there’s plenty, as I’m sure you can imagine!)

Cast your minds back, if you can, to 1964. It was the year that Beatlemania swept the US, Cassius Clay was crowned World Champion, and Tokyo hosted the Summer Olympics.

The 36th Academy Awards were hosted in Santa Monica, California; the categories were still divided into Colour and Black & White film and Sydney Poitier took home the Oscar for Best Actor in Lilies of the Field. Back in the UK, the nation was listening to chart toppers such as The Beatles, Cilla Black and the Hollies. The nation was introduced to a second TV channel: BBC2; and government figures revealed the average weekly wage was £16.

Plenty has changed in the last 60 years. A man walked on the moon for the first time; we lost Elvis and the Beatles; the Berlin Wall fell. We have seen politics, technology, culture and society advance further than we may have ever imagined for those of you of a certain age.

While I won’t provide a full run through of global and domestic events of the past 60 years, I did want to share with you some learnings from the past six decades, which hold true today as they did in the past:

Success is not achieved easily.. hard work trumps lazy talent.. be open to new ideas and concepts.. consistency of effort and ensuring you turn up deliver positive results… willingness to give before receiving and integrity. As MOTD enters its seventh(!) decade, I am looking forward with a keen sense of anticipation about what the coming years have to hold. To that end, we at ABPM+ remain ready and waiting to help you as experts in Financial & IT Recruitment, dedicated to supporting your career and the teams you lead.

Get in touch today to find out how.
