Reference or not to reference – that is the question.

Whether you closely follow the politics of our neighbours across the pond or not, it will not have escaped your notice that there is a Presidential race afoot.

Kamala, the smiling VP armed with an endorsement from Biden and with her finger on the pulse of the here and now; versus Donald, regardless of your opinion of him, he certainly attracts plenty of attention and support. At this point in the summer of campaigning, it remains anyone’s game – though the odds may have slipped in one direction in recent days, not least at the Democratic National Convention.

The Convention, which is a chance for Kamala and her running mate, Tim Walz, to win over the Democrats once and for all (not that it should take much, based on the rave reviews the pair have received even ahead of the conference). And what a stellar line-up it is that has featured at the convention, headlined by the powerhouses that are the Obamas.

With a few jokes sprinkled in at the expense of Trump, Barack and Michelle took to the stage on Day 2 of the DNC to voice their unwavering support of Harris as the next President. While their words may have reaffirmed what many may already believe of Kamala’s potential to lead the USA for the next Presidential term, there is no doubt that the endorsement from what are widely regarded as very reputable sources has only strengthened her campaign.

It’s a truth that is just as applicable in any recruitment or application process. While a reference is not the be all and end all in an employer’s decision process, and in this modern era, securing them can be challenging due to company HR policies for reasons that make sense, alongside psychometric profiling, it is a useful factor in consideration when weighing up a candidate’s suitability and strengths. As such, having a referee and a reference from a credible source is a valuable asset when embarking on a change in career path (unfortunately, not all of us have access to the Obamas to offer such winning reviews!). The importance of your working relationships is brought to the fore here.

Here at ABPM+, we know what it takes to build a strong profile as a candidate and future employee and are well situated to offer advice on all aspects of recruitment, including referees. Contact us today to find out how we can help you.
