When plans go awry… (Except this week’s rare weather, finally! 🙌☀)

Normally, at this time of year, I’d like to be writing about the joys of summer and how beneficial getting out in the sunshine and using the long warm evenings and weekends to recharge can be for us all… Sadly though, the summer to date has not been delivering. Mind, having become a fan of Clarkson’s farm, my disappointment in the summer is a mere trifle compared to challenges the weather presents to our Agri-sector, so I do hope for them that we do have great summer weather part 2.

So if, like me, you enjoy a sunny British summer and the social and sporting opportunities it provides the last two months have been a tad disappointing for not bringing all the good times the weather usually promises. Cricket days lost, (but not Jimmy Anderson’s memorable swansong at Lords!) BBQs washed out, beach trips delayed and a myriad of other best-laid summer plans thwarted by the drizzly state of affairs. Guess what, we still make the best of it with a shrug of our shoulders as the company we keep will overcome any short comings caused by the weather.

It can be frustrating when plans go awry. The British weather may be a whimsical example that we can all relate to, but for many, this is something we may face in our careers too, be it in relation to finding the opportunities sought in the industry we’ve chosen, or progression in our role.

There are so many internal and external factors that create hurdles in our career paths, but how we approach them can lead to positive outcomes, as they are a time to reflect, consider and learn if opportunities are simultaneously being created. I recognise resilience and a strong mindset is needed when faced with such a challenge(s), certainly one that I don’t believe should be ducked.  Sure, we might take a moment, but dwelling on the negatives are rarely, if ever, productive. Instead, it’s time to reevaluate those previously made plans, potentially see why the hurdle occurred and how it can be avoided again, then reroute, either back on track or in a whole new direction that may be opening up.

Here at ABPM, we are experts in supporting individuals as they progress in their career journey, especially when the unexpected occurs on the route. Contact us today to find out how we can assist you carry out or formulate those plans.
