It is just over twenty seven years that the world lost one of its music Greats. Not just a legend in music, but in history, Freddie Mercury would have been 72 years old, had he not lost his battle against AIDS, which he only publicly confirmed having the day before he died. Despite being the ostentatious frontman of Queen, Mercury kept much of his personal life private; even to this day, although we know he died in London, it was never revealed where he was laid to rest.
Although it has been nearly two decades since Freddie Mercury passed away, his legacy remains, strong as ever, perhaps even stronger, given the recent release of the biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, starring Rami Malek. Freddie began playing the piano during his time at school in India – it would’ve been near impossible to imagine that 40 years later, Freddie would be widely regarded as one of the greatest rock icons of all time.
I asked myself what made Mercury’s career so significant? There are many musicians who came from humble beginnings and took to the world stage, but few have had the visibility and longevity of Freddie. Was it the dramatic outfits, that stunning vocal range, the originality of the songs he and the other members of Queen wrote? It was all of these things, which came from being fearlessly true to himself, and boldly ambitious. Although it was at times with some criticism that he made his decisions, he was resolute, and sure to pursue what he wanted in his career.
We could all apply a bit of Freddie to our own careers (I would like to point out I am not suggesting turning up to the day job in a black and white catsuit unless you are a budding Rockstar or a fashion icon). Find your goal and pursue it with determination, build the experience and develop the talent you possess. However, like Freddie no doubt realised during his brief solo career, it is much easier to do this with an able and enthusiastic team behind you.
We here at ABPM are here to support you in your chosen career paths. We hope to be the Queen to your Freddie!
