In last month’s newsletter, I discussed transformation, and the changes experienced in life and careers. While we may have settled into a career path way and be into the rhythm of things as the long dark winter nights start upon us change is afoot, look at our High Streets and the attempts by the government to stimulate confidence and optimism in the economy with backdrop of huge uncertainty on many fronts.
I am often asked about the movement of careers from one sector to another as accountants are trained and developed to have transferable skills. This brought to mind the exciting and challenging change that is taking place in the career of Wasps’ winger Christian Wade. In fact, his career is taking a dramatic turn, as he has been released from his contract at Wasps in order to pursue a career in NFL in the USA. He is not unique, or the first, as Gavin Hastings, the Scottish international & British Lion amongst others from the world of rugby union have taken their talents to the NFL.
It was not a decision made lightly. Wade’s Wasps career spans a very successful nine years, as well as capping for England in 2013 against Argentina, he wished for new horizons which undoubtedly have a part to play in his personal reasons to change from rugby union to the NFL. However, Dai Young, Director of rugby at Wasps, was keen to keep Wade close to home: “We held numerous discussions with him to try and convince him to keep pushing forward with Wasps, but in the end, it was clear this was the path he wished to go down. It is very disappointing to lose a player of his quality at this stage of the season.”
Despite these entreaties to stay, Wade has made his decision. He has been equipped with the methods to succeed in this change in career path, thanks to the international player pathway programme, and he has a goal to convert to the NFL. Although there are reasons for him to stay, he has weighed these against the reasons to go and now, with expert help, he will take the exciting risk, and dive into the unknown.
The manner in which Wade has taken a turn in his career can be applied to careers not just in sports. It may seem daunting to take on a complete change of sector but if you do bring developed and well-honed high quality experience, with the correct assistance and advice there is nothing to stop you from taking the plunge. Especially, if your future employer is willing to support and put in place the requisite processes to enable you bridge any gaps. This latter piece is vital as well as your enthusiasm and determination to invest in your own success.
We here at ABPM are on hand and waiting to guide you into the next phase of your career.
